Charity and Public Benefit
Working in Partnership
At St Hugh's, we encourage pupils to develop a social awareness and to think about how they can make a differece to local, national and global issues. Through partnerships with local and international schools and organisations, by visits and presentations from a wide range of charities and by encouraging fundraising initiatives in school, we draw attention to individuals and organisations who are already making a difference.
We hope that, through awareness gained at school, we can encourage our pupils to have a good understanding of social responsibility and of the positive impact education can have on social problems. We encourage pupils to play their part in enabling others to live a better life.
Each year St Hugh's raises funds for local, national and international charities. In the past five years, we have raised in excess of £25,000 for charities which include: Shelter, Sobell House Hospice Charity, ROSY (Respite nursing for Oxfordshire’s Sick Youngsters), Poppy Appeal , Guide dogs for the blind, SCCWID (Sophie’s Campaign for the Children’s Ward for Interesting things to Do), Marie Curie Cancer (Daffodil Appeal), Wateraid, Shoe Box Appeal, Children In Need, Vanessa Grant School, Kenya, Malawi Dream, Bampton Bush Centre, Unique 2008, CWAC, See-Saw.
Bursary Assistance
The Governors of St Hugh's recognise that independent school fees are now at levels that, despite the best endeavours of their parents, exclude many children from St Hugh's. Accordingly, the Governors set aside a fixed sum each year to provide bursaries for children whose parents could not otherwise afford to send them to St Hugh's. Means testing is used to determine whether a bursary is to be awarded and to what value, with the maximum award being 100% of the fees. In exceptional circumstances, any extra charges will also be paid.
Parents applying for bursaries will be asked to complete a means test form and provide the validating documentation requested. All documents will be treated as confidential. Successful applicants will also be required to furnish information annually regarding their current financial circumstances, so that the level of award can be reviewed and adjusted where necessary. Please contact the Headmaster for further details.
We also offer bursaries to children whose parents work in the armed services. For further details please contact the Registrar.
Charitable Fundraising Autumn Term 2009
Raising money for those less fortunate than ourselves is something St Hugh’s pupils and parents have always done with enormous enthusiasm. This term has been no exception and a separate article appears in the end of term colour newsletter about the Middle School’s Harvest Festival and their fundraising for Afrikaya. On Friday, 20th November, the Pre-Prep staff and children sported some startling socks and tights in aid of Children in Need. On top of this, many of you generously filled shoe boxes for the Samaritan’s Purse Appeal, we provided 19 banana boxes full of shoes for Kosovo and raised £111.33 for the British Legion through the sale of Poppies.
FOSH makes a large donation from the funds it raises each year to a charity supporting children in the local area. Last year £1000 was given to Sophie’s Campaign for the Children’s Ward for Interesting things to Do (SCCWID).
Our Christmas Charity this year is the National Deaf Children’s Society. We feel it is very important that the children have a full understanding of the organisations they support and a representative of the Society came to give an assembly about its work to the Middle and Upper School children, which included a short lesson in finger spelling. This charity will be supported through the sale of the Christmas cards designed by children in Upper School and will benefit from the retiring collection at our annual Carol Service.
In order to co-ordinate all our charitable fundraising, we now have a Charity Committee, with a staff representative from each part of the school. The members are Miss March (Pre-Prep), Miss Creed (Middle School) and Miss Middleton (Upper School) and Suzy Robinson. If you know of a charity you would like us to consider supporting, please let Suzy or one of the other committee members know and we will be glad to consider it.
