Art

At St. Hugh’s we aim to encourage the artist that is within each of us by fostering an enjoyment of the visual arts, developing the imagination and providing the skills necessary for pupils to express their ideas.

We experiment with as many different materials and processes as possible so that pupils are given every opportunity to develop their creativity and reach their potential.

The Curriculum

The school uses a variety of teaching and learning styles in art, with the aim of familiarizing each pupil with the elements of art: line, tone, colour, pattern, form and texture. We give each child the opportunity to experience a wide variety of processes including drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles and 3D work.

Our tasks provide a range of challenges, allowing for the differing ability in all our classes, and suitable learning opportunities are provided, matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the child.

Extending the Curriculum

In addition to timetabled lessons, there are clubs after school and the art room is open to both boarders and day pupils during breaks and in the evenings.

Pupils regularly take part in national and local competitions and exhibitions. In the past few years we have been successful in the Prep Schools Art Exhibition, where we won 'best in show', and in the Royal Horticultural Society Art Competition. We also have 'artist of the week' challenges in school where pupils are awarded prizes for producing work of a high standard in their free time.

Visits from artists, trips to art galleries, museums and exhibitions, as well as workshops both in and out of school, are built into the calendar and the school has an annual open evening for the creative arts.

Each year, pupils are encouraged to prepare for art scholarships to senior schools and we are delighted that so many pupils have been successful in the last few years.

We regularly monitor the standards of children’s work and the quality of our teaching in art. We have a lively department where our children have fun, work with confidence and build a love of the subject that will remain with them throughout their lives.
