The English department believes that language is the basic building block of communication and human creativity and so we aim to empower pupils, enabling them through well developed literary skills, to play a full role in adult life as creative and critical citizens.
Children need the confidence to manipulate their language and thus to be able to explore ideas in a refined and precise way. At St Hugh's they are taught to write fluently, accurately and originally and to become sensitive, alert and appreciative readers.
Our teaching style encourages our children to investigate the possibilities of spoken language both as speaker and listener. We support their reading independently and widely by giving them the skills and confidence to seek challenge in their choices and to respond to the words with sensitivity born out of understanding.
All staff in the department are keen to discuss their approach with parents and welcome contact.
