Boy's Games
Sport is a valued and traditional strength of life at St. Hugh’s with the sports’ department fully committed to a ‘sport for all ethos’. All boys play for a school A, B or C team which has regular, organised fixtures on Wednesday afternoons with some tournaments and matches on a Saturday afternoon.

Years 3 and 4 – four double games sessions per week (including Wednesdays)
Years 5 and 6 – five double games sessions per week (including Wednesdays)
Years 7 and 8 – four double games sessions per week (including Wednesdays)
Autumn Term:
The main boys’ sport from Year 4, for the majority of the Autumn Term, is rugby. This is supplemented by weekly cross-country training and by the end of November pre-season football and hockey preparation. The school follows the RFU continuum for rugby and pupils are introduced to rugby through the tag form of the game in the U8’s and then 9-a-side contact rugby in the U9’s. This is developed to the 12 a side game at Colts level (U10 and U11’s combin
ed) and then the 15 a side game at Seniors (U12 and U13’s combined). In Year 3 the main sports for the Autumn Term are 5 a side football and tag rugby with an introduction to both sports on a weekly basis.
Spring Term:
For the first half of term all boys focus on the major sport of association football. Football is taught following FA guidelines beginning with the 5 a side format of the game at U8’s 6 a side at U9’s, 7 a side at U10’s, 9 a side at U11’s and then 11 a side for Year 7 and 8. For the second half of term all boys in Upper School (Years 5-8) focus on 7-a-side hockey, utilising the school’s excellent new astro-turf, to develop skills and team play. Boys’ hockey continues to go from strength to strength. Boys in Middle School (Years 3 and 4) continue to focus on football as the main sport, although they are introduced to hockey on a once a week basis, ready for their movement to Upper School.

Summer Term:
Boys focus on the major sport of cricket which is supplemented by other summer sports such as swimming, tennis and athletics. Cricket facilities are excellent with four indoor nets, two outdoor nets and cricket squares. Full attention is paid to the individual development of correct technique in all aspects of the game.
The school’s fine tradition of tennis has resulted in regular IAPS national success. In 2008, at the National IAPS Championships held at Queenswood School, 50 Prep schools competed and St Hugh's was overall the most successful Prep school in the country - with the following results:
-
U14 Boys' Singles Winner - U14Girls' Singles Winner

SPORTS TOURS
The boys have undertaken four senior boys cricket tours to Barbados in 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009 which were available for all Years 7 and 8 boys. In all tours of this nature, there is a blend of having fun, playing good quality cricket and making new friends. The tours have been hugely successful and we look forward to taking the next tour to Barbados in 2011.
