Sport is a valued and traditional strength of life at St. Hugh’s with the sports’ department fully committed to a ‘sport for all ethos’. All boys play for a school A, B or C team which has regular, organised fixtures on Wednesday afternoons with some tournaments and matches on a Saturday afternoon.
BOYS’ GAMES PROGRAMME
Years 3 and 4 – four double games sessions per week (including Wednesdays)
Years 5 and 6 – five double games sessions per week (including Wednesdays)
Years 7 and 8 – four double games sessions per week (including Wednesdays)
Autumn Term:
Boys focus on the major sport of rugby which is supplemented by weekly cross-country training. The school follows the RFU continuum and pupils are introduced to rugby through the tag form of the game in the U8’s and then 9-a-side contact rugby in the U9’s. This is developed to the 12 a side game at Colts level (U10 and U11’s combined) and then the 15 a side game at Seniors (U12 and U13’s combined). The school’s fine tradition of rugby has seen notable performances, including winning the Millfield 7’s tournament and the 2007 Cheltenham College Junior School 7’s tournament.
Spring Term:
Boys focus on the major sport of association football for three quarters of the term and then hockey for the remainder. Football is taught following FA guidelines beginning with the 6 a side format of the game at U8 and U9’s through to the 11 a side game for the Upper School. Boys’ hockey continues to go from strength to strength and in 2006 we were U11 district and county champions and in 2007 district champions. The school’s new planned astro-turf will continue to enhance hockey for all at the school.
Summer Term:

Boys focus on the major sport of cricket which is supplemented by other summer sports such as swimming, tennis and athletics. Cricket facilities are excellent with four indoor nets, two outdoor nets and cricket squares. Full attention is paid to the individual development of correct technique in all aspects of the game. The school’s fine tradition of tennis has resulted in regular IAPS national success.
SPORTS TOURS
The boys undertook their first 1st XI cricket tour to Barbados in 2005 which was available for all Years 7 and 8 boys. This hugely successful tour is being repeated in Easter 2007 and there are plans for another tour in 2008.
