Maths

‘Like the crest of a peacock so is mathematics at the head of all knowledge’ - Anonymous

Our aims in the maths department are to teach the children about the beauty and fun of maths as we ll as to give them the ability to see maths all around them and to use maths well in their daily lives. We are still driven by the necessity of external assessments and at St.Hugh’s a combination of New and Traditional Mathematics is taught incorporating the National Curriculum Attainment Targets and gearing towards Common Entrance 13+ or possibly Scholarship Examinations.

Mathematics has moved on a great deal in recent years. However, there is no denying the importance of, for example, learning the times-tables by rote or being able to do long multiplication. The newer, more problem-solving approach to maths gives the pupils the benefit of seeing the patterns and tricks in the times-tables and it teaches them how and why their method for long multiplication works. The trick is finding the right balance!

Staff endeavour to make the teaching and learning of mathematics an enjoyable and purposeful experience for themselves and the pupils. They portray the subject as one of interest and importance with the relevant amount of humour in lessons to assist with pupils’ understanding of each topic.

Mental strategies play a vital role in the syllabus.

For example:
To find 10% you divide by 10; but why?
To times by 8, you can double it once, double again, and then again.
If 54 × 13 = 702, then how do you use that to work out 5.4 × 0.13, or 54 × 26.

Pupils are encouraged to take pride in their work by providing well-presented, methodical and systematic solutions. We also stress the necessity to understand the value of their solutions and to check if their answers make sense.
