Study Skills

Year 7 Study Skills Seminar

This term, all those in Year 7 attended a Study Skills seminar.  This lasted for the morning and they covered the key skills needed for successful study.  In particular, they learned techniques that will help them work in the ways that are best for them.

The morning’s topics were:

  • The importance of knowing how you work
  • Your brain and you
  • Getting organised
  • Taking and making notes
  • Efficient reading
  • Writing skills
  • Concept maps, linear notes and flow charts
  • Revision techniques
  • Examinations
  • Building study skills for life

Each pupil has been given a Study Skills Manual.  They worked through the topics during the seminar and have the booklet to refer to over the year.  Subject teachers will refer to it in the course of their teaching and when it comes to revision and exams, they may suggest specific learning techniques.

The last two years at Prep School can be stressful as the work becomes more demanding.  Adopting effective study skills can help pupils achieve their goals and find the whole learning process more interesting and sometimes, even fun!
