Governors
The Governors at St. Hugh's play an important part in the running of the school. Below can be found a list of our current Board of Governors.
Mr James Guillum Scott, Chairman of Governors
James Guillum-Scott's first association with St Hugh's was as a pupil from 1963 to 1969 when the school consisted of just 60 full boarders. After St Hugh's he was educated at Cranleigh School. He spent his early career working for De Beers as a diamond valuer/buyer, working in Africa and Europe. From the mid 1980's he began a career in property and subsequently became Managing Director of a residential agency firm during the 1990's. He is currently involved in several areas of business, including residential agency and project and facilities management. He joined the Board in 1986 and has been Chairman of Governors since 2006. He is married with three children, is very involved in his local community, and is currently serving as a churchwarden.
Jenny Allan has been a governor since the youngest of her four children left St. Hugh's. Her main career has been a full-time hands-on Mum, augmented by numerous village commitments. She ran 'Music for Tinys' for many years, and helped run the local Girl Guide company. She now teaches at Sunday school, runs the village cafe and serves as a Parish Councillor. In her younger days she worked as a secretary in the NHS and Oxfam, and also trained at Atholl Crescent, Edinburgh, in Institutional Household Management.
Mr Ronald Barnes
Ronald Barnes is a retired Chartered Surveyor, formerly a partner in a national firm of Chartered Surveyors. He is a Trustee of the Ewelme Almshouse Trust, a land owning charity with an Education Foundation and which supports three state junior schools on its estates as well as its almshouse obligations; a Trustee of the Oxfordshire Yeomanry Trust; a director and member of the Management Committee of Fairfield Residential Home; Hon. Treasurer and Committee Member of St. John's College Housing Association; formerly a member of a Leasehold Valuation Tribunal and Rent Assessment Committee.
Mr Peter Boggis, Chairman of Buildings and Estates Committee
Peter Boggis (Chairman of Buildings & Estates Committee) has been a governor since 2002 and is Chairman of the Building & Estates Committee. Up until 2007 he farmed a thousand acres in the Witney area and has now moved to Wiltshire, where he still continues to farm on a much smaller scale and pursue his other interests in property. He has been associated with St. Hugh's since 1955 when he was a pupil under Tom Young. His four children all came to St. Hugh's, during which time he was an active member of FOSH. Whilst Chairman of FOSH, he helped in the fundraising for the sports pavilion and managed its construction.
Mr Peter Chambers
Peter Chambers was educated at Wycliffe College and after school he joined the Civil Service with whom he qualified as a chartered surveyor. His subsequent professional work took him to St James's, London where he was an investment surveyor for Clerical Medical and General before joining the family practice as commercial and development partner. In more recent years he has worked for corporate estate agents and as Land Director at a development company. He is now Land and New Homes Director at an independent surveying and agency practice based in Cirencester. He was elected a Fellow of the RICS in 1989. He is married, has two teenage daughters and lives in the Cotswolds.
Mr John Champion
John Champion has been Bursar and Secretary to the Council at Cheltenham College since January 2008. He is a member of the College senior executive team with responsibility for all aspects of financial, property, estates, personnel and general management. A fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, John enjoyed a career in financial services spanning 25 years and holding a number of senior positions, most recently with the Lloyds Banking Group, prior to joining the independent education sector. John is married to Trish (a teacher in the independent sector), they have two grown-up daughters and live at Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire.
Antony Clark has been Headmaster of Malvern College since 2008. Before this, for six years, he was Headmaster of Gresham's School in Norfolk and, prior to that, for nearly a decade he was Headmaster of St Andrew's College in South Africa, one of the country's leading independent boys' schools. His university experience includes Rhodes University, South Africa, and Cambridge and his subject is History. He played cricket and rugby at top club level (one First Class Cricket appearance) and provincial squash. He is married to Brigitte, a Ph.D. in Law and currently a law lecturer, and they have three children.
Mr Paul Daffern, Chairman of Finance and General Purposes Committee
Paul Daffern (Chairman of Finance & General Purposes Committee) is a qualified accountant and has performed senior Finance Director roles for both European and US companies over the last 30 years. He was worked in both the public sector, as Finance Director for the UK Atomic Energy Authority, and the private sector with Autoglass Ltd, Exel plc, PD Ports plc and Infinis Ltd. Paul is currently a Director of Greengate Holdings Ltd, a renewable energy investment company based in Harwell, Oxon. Paul is married to Hilary and has two children, both of whom went to St Hugh's.
Mrs Judy Forrest
Judy Forrest was Headmistress of Chandlings School, Oxfordshire for nine years, and before this was Headmistress of Upton House School, Windsor. Prior to that she was Head of Lower School at The Manor Prep School, Abingdon, Oxon, for twelve years. She is a member of IAPS (Independent Association of Prep Schools), served on the District Committee and ran the IAPS New Heads' Induction Course. Retired in July 2008, she is now governor of several schools, advises on Pre- Prep education, is an IAPS mentor to new Heads and is an Area Rep for JET (Joint Educational Trust). Her son was a pupil at St Hugh's.
Mrs Susan Jackson, Chairman of Compliance Review Committee
Sue Jackson (Chairman of Compliance Review Committee) is an employment solicitor in Oxford, undertaking training in diversity and employment law. She has worked for Citizens Advice, writing employment law training courses. She returned to Bristol University, graduating with a Masters in Law in 2007. Earlier in her career, she worked for Nestle UK, and co-founded the Food Law Group, a national forum for food law experts. Sue is a trustee of a charity, 'Malawi Dream', which raises funds for education, health and sanitation projects in Malawi. Her three children were all pupils at St Hugh's and are now at university.
Mr Ted Sandbach
Ted Sandbach is the owner and Managing Director of The Oxford Wine Company which he set up in the early 90s having previously taught at Magdalen College School in Oxford. He studied at Loughborough University and has a passion for sport having played Minor county cricket and county rugby. He is chairman of the Oxford Downs CC and is heavily involved in the local community. His three children were educated at St Hugh's before going on to Cheltenham College.
Mr Andrew Trotman
Andrew Trotman has been Warden of St Edward's, Oxford since 2004. He was a pupil at Alleyne's Grammar School before attending Balliol College Oxford. His teaching experience includes spells at Radley College, Abingdon School and the Edinburgh Academy where he was Deputy Rector. He was Head Master at St Peter's, York from 1995 - 2004. He was a Justice of the Peace from 1997 - 2004. He is a member of the Committee of the National Schools' Regatta and the Oxford Independent and State Schools' Partnership. His interests include music, sport and literature. He is married with two grown-up children.
