Literacy in Pre-Prep

RWI (Read, Write, Inc.)

We were delighted to be awarded the title of 'Model School' by Ruth Miskin Literacy.

Literacy is not confined to a slot in a timetable. It is the warp and weft that holds together the glorious tapestry that is learning. Listening, speaking, reading, writing – words, underpin everything we do in and out of school and the teaching of literacy skills needs a very special approach. We believe that we have found a great way to build a strong foundation of literacy skills and confidence in our children.

Some years ago we adopted throughout St Hugh's, the RWI (Read, Write, Inc.) literacy training programme written by Ruth Miskin. This lively and inspiring scheme had been a great success and we were delighted to have been awarded the title of 'Model School' and now have the opportunity to invite teachers from other schools (as far afield as Hong Kong!) to see just how successful it can be in helping a child to talk, think, read, write and spell successfully.

Naturally, much of the work building the basic skills, is done in Pre-Prep and it is amazing to see how quickly the children begin to use these skills in every aspect of school life.

Lots of opportunities for partner work encourage the children to share ideas with each other and develop their listening, talking and debating skills.

Lively texts and stories, backed up with imaginative teaching methods, gives the children confidence to create for themselves.

Regular and systematic groundwork with sounds and sentence building and memory tasks gives the children practice in all the skills needed to use their language in any way they need or wish.

Best of all it is fun! (And not just for the children!)

Storyteller Pre-Prep

The Pre-Prep children were visited by a story-teller on Tuesday, 2nd February. She told stories related to the term's topics and took the Year 2 children for a story-telling workshop. The staff and children alike are looking forward to putting their new story-telling skills into practise as part of our World Book Day celebrations on 12th March.
