Numeracy in Pre-Prep

Numeracy in Pre-Prep

In Pre-Prep we follow a scheme of work called Abacus Evolve. This scheme is in line with all the recommendations set out in the Primary Framework for literacy and mathematics (PNS).

Foundation Stage: Alongside the teaching of core mathematical concepts, each numeracy session contains fun and purposeful activities, which encourage the children to become confident with numbers, shapes, space and measures. During the sessions, appropriate language is used so that children can build up mathematical vocabulary, complete calculations and begin to record down their mathematical ideas.

Year One and Two: Numeracy sessions in Years One and Two build on the early mathematical concepts learnt in the Foundation Stage. Each session begins with an oral mental starter, develops to a numeracy concept using extensive mathematical vocabulary and then concludes with a fun, creative plenary.

Numeracy games are an important part of children becoming confident with numbers. Therefore, designated time is allocated each week both in and out of the numeracy sessions for numeracy games to be played and enjoyed.

The Pre-Prep staff understand that children learn and develop at different rates. Therefore, we plan differentiated numeracy activities, which encourage all children to succeed in a safe environment with continual praise.

Each child in Pre-Prep is involved with the global website of Mathletics. The site consolidates mathematical concepts taught in class and the children love to play against each other and against other children from all over the world.

Every year, Pre-Prep runs a Maths Day where the children enjoy working together to find hidden numbers in the grounds of the school, weighing out different ingredients for cooking yummy cakes and cookies and measuring one another for a whole Pre-Prep height chart. There is even number spaghetti for lunch!
