Nursery

The Cottage Nursery at St Hugh’s will open this September in an exciting newly extended building next door to the Pre-Prep Department. The nursery has a warm homely feel as it was previously the groundsman’s cottage and still boasts many of its original features, including sash windows and the old fireplaces. The sympathetic renovation has meant that the nursery will be a secure and self-contained unit whilst at the same time integrating with the rest of the school.

Fun and exciting activities will be planned on a daily basis following the curriculum for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The EYFS is built up of six areas of development in line with all the DFES guidelines. These include -

- Personal, Social and Emotional Development

- Communication, Language and Literacy

- Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy

- Knowledge and Understanding of the World

- Physical Development and

- Creative Development

It is very important within our nursery that all children are carefully taught, supported and challenged in each of these six areas of their development. Therefore, every effort will be made to provide stimulating and interesting resources which will ensure that all children are motivated to reach their full potential and meet their Early Learning Goals by the end of their Reception year.

As well as all the usual nursery activities, for example, visiting the library, cooking time and PE sessions etc., we are very lucky in the Cottage Nursery to have all the latest Information Technology for the children to use as well as some specialist teachers who will come in to work with small groups of children. Each week the children will spend time in the ICT suite working with computer software and they will participate in Music and Movement workshops. There will also be the opportunity to learn some French.

We are very aware of the need to promote ‘healthy eating’. Therefore, nutritious lunches and snacks are made each day by the school kitchen and the children are encouraged to try new tastes and textures. The children will have a snack mid-morning with a carton of milk, followed by lunch at 11.30am. The afternoon snack is served at 2,30pm and there is always water on offer throughout the day as we encourage our children to ‘drink to think’!

The Cottage Nursery is open Monday to Friday during the term-time. The morning session will run from 8.30am – 12.15pm which includes lunch. The afternoon session begins at 12.30 – 3.30pm.

This is a very exciting development for St Hugh’s and we look forward to welcoming you into the nursery soon.
