Science in Pre-Prep

Whatever the age of the child, science should be exciting, stimulating a curiosity that is life long. At St Hugh’s we recognise the important ways in which science affects the lives of people everywhere in the world and how it can be used to help make decisions, solve problems and carry out jobs. Our science teaching offers opportunities for children to:

  • develop knowledge and understanding of important scientific ideas, processes and skills and relate these to everyday experiences;
  • learn about ways of thinking and of finding out about and communicating ideas;
  • explore values and attitudes through science.

Science in the Pre-Prep starts in the Foundation Stage as children progress through the stepping stones to achieve the early learning goals in Knowledge and Understanding of the World by the end of the Reception year. At Key Stage One, the emphasis on practical, investigative activities continues. As part of our topic work, children are encouraged to develop their thinking skills, working individually and in groups. They build on their knowledge and understanding of scientific concepts and learn to collect and evaluate evidence. Through a wide range of practical activities children start to explore and develop an understanding of their own environment and the world in which they live. At all phases of their development, the children are encouraged to be curious and investigate, to develop problem-solving skills, to ask questions and to kno w how to use references. They also learn to use appropriate language and about the importance of health and safety.


Pre-Prep often invites visitors into school to share their experiences and the pupils also go on visits to Cotswold Wildlife Park, Millets Farm, London Aquarium and the Goldfish Bowl in Oxford.

10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1, BLAST OFF! Pre-Prep’s space science day started in the sports hall with a visit from a mobile planetarium. The children sat spell bound as they were blasted off into space on the space shuttle and then glided throw the stars and planets. The mini planetarium was an excellent way to explore our galaxy.

 The children then took part in a planet hunt around Pre-Prep. The nine planets had first to be found and then letters unscrambled to find out which planet it was.

In the afternoon we became scientist and engineers, designing and making our own spacecrafts from junk. NASA would be have been very proud of the many designs that were produced and the problem solving that took place. The whole of Pre-Prep then met in the hall to display their craft, where the children explained what their crafts were made from, how they were made, and the problems encountered in making them and how they were solved.

 

The day finished with some exciting space stories.
