Music in Pre-Prep
All children in Pre-Prep have a weekly music lesson where they learn about pitch, rhythm, timbre, music appreciation, percussion, composition and so much more…

Singing lessons
All children have a half hour singing lesson once per week: the emphasis being singing for pleasure and includes nursery rhymes and action songs. There is also a Pre-Prep choir club which meets once a week and is attended by Year 1 and 2 children.
Music lessons
The recorder club for Year 2 is always very popular and takes place once a week. Children also have the opportunity for individual tuition on a variety of instruments including violin, guitar, piano and drums.
Musical Productions and Performing Arts
All children take part in the Christmas Nativity plays in which singing and music making is an essential
element. Every term each class takes a school assembly: this often includes songs they have been learning in class that are closely associated with their topic work. At the end of the Summer Term, the
Year 2 children present a leavers assembly - the recorder club, the violin group and children learning the guitar can showcase their work at this event.
Visits and Visitors
Pre-Prep often invites musicians into school to share their talent, skill and love of music with us. An amazing afternoon was spent with an African drummer who had us all playing and moving to the beat! We also visit the Pantomime every Christmas where we all enjoy singing along with the cast. St Hugh’s has its own very talented musicians and orchestra in the senior and middle school and we are often invited to watch them perform.
Assemblies
Each week a different piece of music is played at the beginning and end of assemblies. This introduces the children to a wide variety of music from all genres.
