Religious Studies in Pre-Prep

RS in Pre-Prep

"Religion is to do right. It is to love, it is to serve, it is to think, it is to be humble." Ralph Waldo Emerson

St Hugh's has a strong Christian ethos with an emphasis on knowing God, loving and respecting one another, learning how to forgive and understand. In Pre-Prep RS enters into many of our daily activities, as we learn to share and work together. It is, however, in our RS lessons that we start to investigate, not just the foundations of Christianity, but also of some other major world religions. In this way we aim to develop in our children understanding, respect and tolerance for the different beliefs and cultures important to others.  Godsworlddisplay

Autumn Term

The centrepiece of the Pre-Prep year is the Nativity. All the children take part and it is an immensely valuable opportunity for them to learn the story of the birth of Jesus, as well as to perform, sing, recite poetry, speak in public, interact with each other and work as a team.

This term will also be a time for children in Year 2 to learn about other aspects of Jesus' life – as a boy, as a young man and the important work he carried out in his last three years. Year 1 children find out about the Christian creation story and the Garden of Eden. Understanding that our actions have consequences is an important message considered as part of this project. In Reception we preview the birth of Jesus with a look at us as babies and the important people in our lives as we grow up.

Spring Term

Easter is the highlight of the spring term. But in the run up to this very important festival, other religions such as Islam, Sikhism and Judaism, are explored in Year 1, and Year 2 children concentrate on the Christian places of worship. We are lucky to be able to visit our local church as part of this study. In Reception we investigate how special and unique we are and how God loves us all.

Summer Term

As the school year draws to a close the Year 2 children follow up their detailed work on Christianity by considering the importance of signs, symbols and artefacts of other religions to their followers. In Year 1 we look at the messages to be found in the teachings and parables of Jesus and in Reception we think about how to take care of the beautiful world which surrounds us.

Right through the year our assemblies, which can be taken by Pre-Prep staff, the Headmaster, our Head of RS, and of course by the children themselves, encourage us all to think about God, to gain a better understanding of the teachings of Jesus and to learn how to be the best we possibly can.
