At St Hugh's School, we take pride in our strong sense of community, working closely together to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that is continually reviewed to ensure learning is accessible to every pupil. Our goal is to support pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in raising both their aspirations and their achievements, enabling them to thrive within our nurturing environment. We have an experienced Learning Success teacher in each of the three stages of the school. These specialist teachers are responsible for planning and co-ordinating the provision for pupils identified prior to entrance, as well as for those whose needs are recognised as they progress through the school.
When it is identified that a pupil requires additional support to fully access the mainstream curriculum, an assessment of their individual needs will take place. Parents may choose to have their child assessed by an educational psychologist should further insight into specific difficulties or learning needs be required. The outcomes of all assessments are shared openly with parents and relevant members of staff, allowing for thoughtful discussion about the best next steps. Following this collaboration, additional support, whether this be either short or long-term, may be recommended, and personalised targets will be set out in a Learning Success Plan (LSP) to guide the child’s progress.
Learning Success sessions are then tailored to meet each child’s individual needs, with intervention typically beginning through small booster groups. Throughout the school, classes are also supported by teaching assistants who encourage and assist children in both literacy and numeracy. We work closely with the English and Maths departments to reinforce the structured schemes already in place. Emphasis is placed on helping pupils enjoy their learning, build confidence, achieve their potential, and ultimately become as independent as possible.
