Our Remembrance Service is always a very solemn and moving occasion, and this morning's gathering of pupils, staff and parents was especially poignant. Today, perhaps for the first time since 1945, the Roll of Honour was read out containing the names of former boys who gave their lives in both World Wars. Until earlier this year, we knew only the names of the boys who died in the Great War, but during the Easter break, an index box containing around 1000 record cards for St Hugh's pupils dating from between the 1920s and 1970s, was discovered at school. Mr Hargreaves, our Head of History, and his wife Jenny, have begun the fascinating but time-consuming task of researching the names on the cards. Although this undertaking is by no means complete, their research to date has allowed us to construct a Roll of Honour for St Hugh's boys who gave their lives between 1939-1945.
