Part -time head of history

Start date:  Autumn term 2025

Due to the post-holder retiring, this is an exciting opportunity for an outstanding History Teacher to join St Hugh’s as a Head of History.  The successful candidate will be an inspiring historian who passionate about prep school education and have the idea, drive, and enthusiasm to lead this department in the next phase of academic development at St Hugh’s.

St Hugh's is a highly regarded coeducational day and boarding school. We are situated on a beautiful green campus of 40 acres in the South Oxfordshire countryside, only 25 minutes from Central Oxford.  In June 2025, the Headmaster and Governors announced that St Hugh’s would be opening a Senior School in September 2026.  This opportunity is representative of the forecasted growth of the school in the years ahead.  It is a very exciting time to be joining St Hugh’s.

The post holder will report directly to the Deputy Head Academic. This is a part time position (0.62 FTE), working four days a week, with an opportunity to increase to full time very likely in the future as the Senior School launches.

PRE-PREP WRAP AROUND CARE SUPERVISOR

We are seeking a hard-working, reliable and flexible Part time Wrap Around Care Supervisor to work as part of the energetic Early Years and the Pre-Prep department at St Hugh’s School.  The working days for this role will be Monday to Wednesday inclusive, 1515– 1730 during term time.

Your role will be to provide, support and supervise our wrap around care provision for pupils (Nursery – Year 2) after the school day ends.   The successful candidate will be flexible and hardworking.  You will be welcomed onto an enthusiastic, collaborative and dynamic team who are committed to ensuring that our pupils are provided with a stimulating education in a rounded nurturing environment.

SWIM SCHOOL VACANCIES

 

SWIM TEACHERS 

We are looking for Level 2 qualified swimming teachers to work in the wonderful pool facility at St Hugh’s.

The swim school operates on the following days and times (during term time on a weekly basis ).  

Monday: 15:45 – 18:50

Tuesday: 17:35 – 19:35 

Wednesday: 15:45 – 18:50

Thursday: 19:00 – 21:00

Friday: 15:45 – 18:20

Saturday: 10:00 - 13:00

Sunday: 13:30 – 16:30

There is also the potential for additional work over the holiday periods as well as during school term time depending on demand.  We also offer the option for you to hire the pool on Sunday mornings 08:30 – 12:30 or Thursday evenings 19:00 – 21:00 and bring your own clients for 1:1 lessons (subject to availability). 

St Hugh’s school can subsidise your Swim England L1+2 swim teaching courses with the following terms and conditions.

There would be a 1-year payback of the course.

1.     If candidate fails the course, 100% paid back to the school

2.     If a minimum of 231 hours (7 hours a week x 33 weeks a year) of teaching for St Hugh’s school is undertaken in 1 calendar year the full cost of course will be paid for by St Hugh’s School

3.     If teaching hours are between 99 and 230 for the calendar year, then 50% of course is paid back by the candidate to St Hugh’s school.

4.     If less than 99 hours of teaching in the calendar year, then full cost of course will be paid back by the candidate to the school.

St Hugh’s School will pay the up-front costs of the course and you will get paid the following rates of pay whilst teaching on a self-employed basis between period 01.09.24 – 31.08.25:

Level 1 - £15.75 per hour

Level 2 - £27.16 per hour

You will require to take out Swim England Membership which provides insurance cover for swim teachers working on a self-employed basis. You will also need to submit a monthly invoice to the school for swim teaching work completed to receive payment. It will be your responsibility to declare any income earned to the HMRC on an annual basis.

PART-TIME AND CASUAL LIFEGUARDS 

Working alongside the Lettings and Commercial Manager you will oversee the smooth operations of the swimming pool and wider School site.  This is an expanding area of the School programme, and presents our team with many opportunities to work in a variety of wide ranging and varied tasks. 

There are no prerequisite requirements for this job. We are looking for the right person to fit with our team dynamic. The successful candidate will be expected to complete a National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) if they don’t already hold one, as well as have good customer service and teamworking skills. The School will pay for any training required to be able to fulfil this roles functions and once qualified the School provides ongoing professional training for Lifeguards as required by the Royal Life Saving Society. 

We are recruiting for two 26 hours per week term time only (34 weeks a year) part time roles working on a bi-weekly shift pattern and alternate weekends to start in September 2025.  During our busy term time programme, we require lifeguards to be on shift across the following periods and you would be expected to work a variety of shifts across them:

Mondays                        3.15pm – 7.30pm

Tuesday                         5.00pm – 7.00pm

Wednesdays                  3.15pm – 7.30pm

Thursdays                     4.30pm – 9.30pm

Fridays                           3.15pm – 7.00pm

Saturdays                      7.30am – 4.30pm

Sundays                         8.00am – 8.30pm

Additionally, we have a growing holiday programme which provides further opportunities for work over the holiday periods and an opportunity to earn extra money!

Salary for the part time roles is £10,513 per annum.

We are also actively recruiting for lifeguards on a casual basis to work alongside the part time roles in the shifts detailed above with an immediate start date.

Hourly rate for the casual contract is £11.95 per hour.
