St Hugh's is a highly regarded co-educational day and boarding prep school with 350 pupils between the ages of 3 and 13. Are you looking for a new and exciting opportunity to lead and develop Boarding in a highly successful, non-selective Prep School? 

St Hugh’s welcomes applications from enthusiastic, inspiring, and innovative people who possess the potential to lead and inspire the strategic development of the school’s Boarding provision. This is an idea post for an individual or couple with an ambition and desire to play a full and active part in the St Hugh’s Community.

The successful candidate will be a member of the Pastoral Leadership Team for the whole school and will also lead and develop a dynamic and collaborative Boarding Team of matrons, tutors, gap students, and grad gap students. In addition, candidates should note that we are open to discussing the possibility of a boarding position for the candidate’s partner should that be appropriate. Further teaching opportunities may become available.

The role of House Parent(s) is a very rewarding vocation, and at times all-consuming, as you watch the children in your care grow and develop. The appointed candidate(s) will be able to offer outstanding pastoral care and promote a sense of community and fun for both all boarders. You will take a genuine and detailed overview of all boarders’ academic progress and support needs, recognising the children’s individual strengths and challenges, and flexing your approach to get the best from each individual. You will also be responsible for the provision of a varied programme of activities available to the pupils in the evenings.

GRADUATE SPORTS & BOARDING ASSISTANT ROLE (Two positions)

This is an exciting opportunity for a recent university graduate who is interested in developing a career in teaching sport in an environment which encourages “sports for all”.   This ethos ensures that all our pupils are given the opportunity to take part in a broad range of sports and to develop to their maximum potential whilst ensuring high standards are met. We have an extensive fixture list both locally and in national competitions.   Our sporting facilities are first class, with acres of playing fields, cricket nets, Astro turf, five netball courts, a full-sized sports hall and an indoor swimming pool.  The role will also provide essential support in boarding. 

The role would also suit a candidate who is interested in working in boarding community as part of a residential team of tutors to support the pastoral and academic needs of boarders. To this end, the successful candidates would have extensive responsibility in the boarding house, working to provide a safe and stimulating environment for the children in our care. It would provide an excellent opportunity for whole-school experience.

We are recruiting for two vacancies, both initially on a one-year fixed term contract. Subject to successful completion of probation in the first year and if we have an appropriate vacancy into the future, there may be an opportunity for this to be extended. We may also be open to discussions about supporting candidates through a teaching qualification in a second year at St Hugh’s.

This is a live-in role and free accommodation is provided in a flat, shared with one other Graduate Sports and Boarding Assistant.  All meals will be provided during school term-time.

The role involves coaching a wide variety of sport, but in particular boys’ hockey, football and cricket.

RESIDENT ASSISTANT HOUSE PARENT

St Hugh’s School is seeking a full time resident Assistant Houseparent to join our boarding community.

Boarding at St Hugh’s is in excellent health with a mixture of weekly (Monday to Saturday am) and flexi, UK based boarders filling the 65 beds in the house.

The role of Assistant Houseparent at St Hugh’s is purely pastoral, underpinning the provision of outstanding welfare support for pupils in the House, and the successful candidate will work as assistant to the House Parents in a busy flexi/weekly preparatory boarding house. The key responsibilities of the role are as follows:

  • Primarily, the Assistant Houseparent will provide direct support to pupils and staff, assisting with managing all aspects of the health, welfare and pastoral care of pupils, adhering to relevant school policies at all times;
  • Secondly, the Assistant Houseparent will provide support for the House Parents with a wide range of administrative duties relating to pupils and their parents;
  • Thirdly, the Assistant Houseparent will work closely with the operational management team to ensure that the House catering, cleaning and laundry teams maintain standards, in accordance with School policy and operating specifications.

The duties of the role will be wide and varied, but it is essential for the Assistant Houseparent to be able to demonstrate an empathy with and understanding of young people, a sense of humour and a genuine concern for the pupils' well-being and active involvement in their personal development. They will be required to positively encourage the pupils in their interests and activities, and to develop a professional and friendly relationship with them. The Assistant Houseparent will also provide support in the maintenance of morale, standards and the efficient operation of the Boarding House.

Our ideal candidate will have experience of working with children aged 6-13 years old and relevant qualifications in medical or welfare related roles would be desirable. Excellent interpersonal, problem solving and organisational skills are also essential, as is the ability to work flexibly, maintaining a focus on quality at all times.

While the role would suit a current Assistant Houseparent, we are keen to attract applicants whose experience will not, as yet, cover all aspects of the role. We will provide training and 1:1 mentoring to support the development of the skills needed.

Please note: this is a non-academic position and there is no teaching timetable available, or likely to become attached to this post.

PART TIME MINIBUS DRIVERS

Start Date: Summer term 2024

We are recruiting for minibus drivers to transport our pupils from their homes in villages in Oxfordshire into St Hugh’s in Carswell each day and home at the end of the day.

We have three roles currently available covering three different routes for the morning pick up to be at St Hugh’s in time for the start of the school day and at the end of the day to take the pupils home.

Exact hours will be dependent on the route and will be discussed at interview but as a guide will be mornings - 6.45am to 8.15am and evenings 5.15pm to 6.30pm Monday to Friday inclusive.

We can offer £13.00 per hour, a friendly and welcoming team to work with and term-time only working (approx. 34 weeks per year).

SITE AND BUILDING MAINTENANCE FACILITIES OFFICER / HANDY-PERSON

SWIM SCHOOL VACANCIES

SWIM TEACHERS 

We are looking for Level 2 qualified swimming teachers to work in the wonderful pool facility at St Hugh’s.

The swim school operates on the following days and times so you will need to be available on a weekly basis, during term time, for at least one of these shifts:

Monday: 15:45 - 17:50

Wednesday: 15:45 – 18:50

Friday: 15:45 – 18:20

Saturday: 10:00 - 13:00

Saturday: 13:00 – 16:00 

Sunday: 13:00 – 16:00

There is also the potential for additional work over the holiday periods as well as during school term time depending on demand.  We also offer the option for you to hire the pool on Sunday mornings 08:30 – 12:30 or Thursday evenings 19:00 – 21:00 and bring your own clients for 1:1 lessons (subject to availability). 

All candidates must have a valid Level 2 swimming teacher qualification and previous experience of teaching, along with up-to-date public liability insurance.  The salary will be £25 per hour on a self-employed basis or £20 per hour on a contract.
